Work Sample #1
Name of Assignment: Notebook Cover Collage
Subject: History of Modern Music
Facilitator/Teacher: Mr. Goring
Description of Work/Assignment:
Part of our class for History of Modern Music is pasting pictures of and taking notes on historical events and icons in the music world in our journals. Mr. Goring wanted this journal to reflect us and our attitudes toward music.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I think that this assignment addressed my Communication Skills. Communicating my love of music through magazine cutouts was an interesting challenge in communication.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am actually most proud of my presentation. I put a lot of thought into each element of the journal's cover and I had a lot of fun explaining it.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
Because this was such a unique way of communicating my music taste, it really developed my Communication Skills. I had to figure out how to communicate such a vast array of ideas with just the cutouts I could find in the bin in the back of the classroom.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The hardest thing, after the challenge with my Communication Skills, was getting the glue to dry. I had a lot of layers to glue to the journal so it got very sticky. It kept leaving residue in my schoolbag.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
Honestly, I wish I started out with a little bit more of a coherent plan for all the images I included. I had a lot that I wanted to include, but it ended up being a little more all-over-the-place than I wanted.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
I have done themed collages before. I actually took inspiration from one I did in my Freshman art class that dealt a lot with the color red.
How can you apply this to future learning?
This project taught me a lot about communicating themes in unconventional ways, specifically through art.
