Work Sample #3
Name of Assignment: SOC 100 Forums
Subject: General Survey of Sociology (SOC 100)
Facilitator/Teacher: Professor Jacqueline Perry
Description of Work/Assignment:
Every other week in my Sociology class we have a research prompt that we have to respond to in 400-600 words. Then, the next week, we formulate detailed responses to our peers' posts that include things we learned in the current module.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I believe that this assignment addresses my Information skills. While each of the prompts we are given are related to what we learn in class, they each require outside research and critical thinking on topics that we often pick ourselves. This tested my literacy of internet research and deciding what is credible and relevant.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of my response during Module 4, concerning culture. I researched a state in India called Kerala. It was very fascinating, but finding credible, relevant information was very difficult. It took a lot of digging, but I was able to find good sources and provide comprehensive response to that week's prompt.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
My 21st Century skill was improved by this assignment because of what I have mentioned about the difficulty of the research. The responses we give are short but in-depth and this has really allowed me to built upon my research and information skills.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
As I mentioned, the research was very difficult. Especially to complete in such a small amount of time while I had a lot of other things going on.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I could start over on some of the forums, I would definitely have tried harder to make time for them earlier in the week. Sometimes I would have to revise a forum after the due date because I had finished it, delirious and tired, late the night before it was due.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
Through this assignment, I was able to apply a lot of different writing comprehension skills that I have learned in the past.
How can you apply this to future learning?
Throughout this course, I've researched a lot of really interesting topics that I'm sure will help me in my education. Beyond that, I've gotten a lot of experience with my research skills that will help me with future research assignments.
