Work Sample #4
Name of Assignment: You, Honeycreeper Project
Subject: Biology
Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Wilson
Description of Work/Assignment: In this assignment, we were each to write a newsletter from the point of view of a different kind of native Hawaiian Honeycreeper or other example of adaptive radiation. We were told to talk about our species' eating habits, habitat, ancestry, and current condition.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This assignment addresses my Information skills. This is because of the research I had to do for this project. Before, I knew next to nothing about the 'Akohekohe Honeycreeper, but now I can tell you where they eat, what they eat, and how many of them are left.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of my organization and formatting of the newsletter. Though most of it was a template, the last two pages were all me. I especially enjoyed making the phylogenetic tree with Canva.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I usually don't research things for biology, as we don't do a lot of research projects. It was interesting to practice my research skills in a subject I struggle in.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
Like I said, I really didn't know that much about Honeycreepers. The most difficult thing was probably figuring out the phylogenetic tree, even though I was able to use a reference.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I could start over, I would probably take a more formal approach to my writing. I worry that I was a bit too informal and friendly with my audience for a paper like this.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
I already had a fair amount of experience with Canva so that helped me immensely in this project.
How can you apply this to future learning?
I can use what I've learned about adaptive radiation in future, more advanced science classes.
