Name of Assignment: Build a Life Project
Subject: Junior Seminar
Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Kepler
Description of Work/Assignment:
The 'Build a Life' project is a multi-part series of activities we did for homework and in class. It's an ongoing project, but so far we have participated in a mock job search, application, and interview.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I feel that this assignment addresses my Financial, Economic, and Business Literacy skill. In the first part of this assignment, we had to research a chosen job and calculate how much we would be paid by taking into account the hours we would work and the taxes we would have to pay on our income.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
What I am most proud of for this was kind of a side effect. While researching jobs, I found one that I would like to do in reality and I applied to it. I ended up getting the job because I decided to put myself out there and I'm proud of myself for that.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
Before this assignment, I couldn't have even told you what an income tax was. Because of the money calculating activity, I found out some valuable information on how income works, what a tax exemption is, and how that applies to work in Hawaii and other states.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The hardest part about this was probably the interview activity. In this activity we watched several videos on possible interview questions and how to answer them. The prompt 'tell me about yourself' was especially hard because of how broad it was, but the videos we watched definitely helped.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
To improve this work, I would want to put more effort into my references. The references I put would work, but I want to put some more credible ones to make the assignment more realistic and practice putting real references on a resumé.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
This is some pretty new material for me. But I think it definitely relates to my education in math and also in etiquette. For the interviews, there is a certain way you have to speak that I learned through addressing teachers and superiors throughout my schooling.
How can you apply this to future learning?
Someday, I want to take a consumer economics class or something similar, and I think this experience will definitely give me some background for that.
