Work Sample #3
a
Name of Assignment: Choice Instructables Project
Subject: Computer Science/Engineering
Facilitator/Teacher: Mr. Hazlet
Description of Work/Assignment: We were instructed to go on the website Instructables and choose a project that interested us. We would then follow the directions posted by the original creator and make our own version. We would do this with whatever tools we had available while documenting the process and taking pictures.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This assignment addressed my Thinking and Problem Solving skills. Though my dad helped me along the way, there were many issues we ran into that we had to think up solutions to.
I also feel it addressed my Financial, Business, and Economic Literacy Skill, though perhaps on a smaller scale. I didn't need to buy anything too expensive, but to make the project as financially efficient as possible, I worked with my dad to reuse and recycle certain parts that we already had, rather than add them to our shopping list.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of all the tools I learned how to use. Though woodworking is not my passion, knowing how to use dangerous machines, such as a drill press or a chop saw, safely and responsibly makes me proud.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
I improved upon my thinking and problem solving skills by working with issues I had little to no experience in. For instance, the palm sander makes the wood shake violently if you don't hold it with a strong enough grip. I solved this issue by bracing the board against the workbench to keep it steady.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
Pounding nails into wood is more difficult than it seems. We repeatedly ran into the problem of the nails being to weak and the wood being too hard. We solved this issue by covering up the uglier nail holes with wood putty.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
I would watch out more for the hardness of the wood I'm using. Next time, I would try to make sure it's more uniform.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
I had to use a lot of math in this project. The very first step, we had to use a calculator to figure out how to divide a six foot stick into four pieces.
How can you apply this to future learning?
I believe I can use this in future learning by applying the problem solving I used here to other projects.
