Work Sample #3
Name of Assignment: That's All, Folks!
Subject: History of Modern Music
Facilitator/Teacher: Mr. Goring
Description of Work/Assignment:
For this assignment, we were asked to pick a famous folk song and research its origins and history as well as three different versions of the song. I picked Down By the Riverside.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This was an especially fascinating project which expanded upon my Global Awareness Skills. Down By the Riverside is an important piece of history, specifically concerning African American culture in the U.S. during the time of slavery.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of the video and sound editing that I did. Video editing has been a fun hobby for me for a long time so I was really glad that this video turned out well.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
This project taught me about the concept of river baptisms, the culture of slave songs, and many other elements of African American culture in the U.S..
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The hardest thing about this assignment was probably the research and finding the appropriate images to use for the final segment.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I could start over, I'd probably start sooner. I felt like I didn't have enough time to make it a product I was thoroughly proud of.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
As I mentioned, I've always really liked video editing. Music is another of my passions and the two of these things combined allowed me to create a product using many skills I've learned in the past.
How can you apply this to future learning?
This is my first time taking a music history class and I am learning that, although there is more to history than music, it reflects a great deal of the major historical events happening at the time. This could be an interesting lens with which to view my future history and music lessons.
