Work Sample #2
Name of Assignment: Life Hacks: Expert Teachings
Subject: Junior Seminar
Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Cassie Kepler
Description of Work/Assignment:
For this assignment, we were asked to research a life skill and teach it to our classmates through a slideshow, video, or in-person demonstration. I learned how to patch holes in drywall and taught it to my classmates in a video format.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I think that this addresses my Self-Directional Skills. For this project, I really wanted to something that would help me in the future and patching holes seemed like an important skill. This is what led me to choose my project, but even beyond that it was very self-directed. I was able to choose the format and method as well and video seemed like it would be the most effective for the method I chose.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I think I'm most proud of the physical end product of this assignment. Not necessarily the video, but the holes that I patched. I patched two holes in the wall of my family's home. They look very seamless and I think I did pretty good for my first try.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
My Self-Direction skills developed because of the wide variety of options and paths I could have taken with this project. It's not often that I get to do a project where I get to almost completely choose the direction and it was good practice for me to decide what would be the most beneficial for me to learn for me and my future.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
I think the hardest part was actually the way I went about my research. Essentially, my dad taught me how to do it, but I needed online references to include in my presentation. So I sort of had to go backwards, retrace my steps and find credible sources that matched what my dad had taught me. But beyond that, the hardest thing was holding my phone in one hand while I applied the Spackle.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I was going to do it over again, I would try to get a tripod or something to prop my phone on so that my video would be smoother and I could more effectively show what I was doing.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
As I've mentioned before, I was able to use my video editing skills to complete this assignment and I think they definitely helped make my presentation more effective.
How can you apply this to future learning?
However, beyond that, this was a completely new experience. I want to learn more about practical skills like this and I think this is a great first step to start my learning.
