Work Sample #4
Name of Assignment: Submission #1
Subject: ENG 104
Facilitator/Teacher: Professor Paul Wood
Description of Work/Assignment:
This project was the culmination grade for my college english class. We were instructed to put together three pieces we'd written in that block: prose personifying our imaginations, a poem inspired by a simple object, and another poem we'd revised.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
I think that this assignment represents my Communication skill. Writing is an important form of communication and practicing different forms of it definitely applies this skill.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of the second piece, the candle poem. I struggled to think of a topic for that one, but it ended up turning out pretty nice in my opinion.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
My professor likes to tell us that writing is kind of useless when you don't have an audience. Through this assignment, we got to practice the different ways a writer can communicate to her audience and the different feelings she can draw out.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The hardest part was probably the revision on the last poem. I've always had a hard time with revision because I tend to read over and adjust the piece obsessively before I even turn it in the first time. This makes it harder for me to spot possible revisions.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I could start over, I think I would pick a different poem to revise. I have a better, more succinct one that I think I could have done a better job with.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
I've been writing for a very long time, Language Arts has always been my favorite subject. I got to apply those skills here.
How can you apply this to future learning?
While I've been writing a long time, I have very little experience with poetry. This assignment and this class, as it has two whole units on poetry, will definitely be applicable in my future writing endeavors.
