Work Sample #4
Name of Assignment: ENG 200 Book Critique
Subject: Composition II (ENG 200)
Facilitator/Teacher: Professor Andaluz
Description of Work/Assignment:
For this assignment, we were to write a book review and critique on Why People Believe Weird Things by Michael Shermer.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
This assignment most represents my Thinking and Problem Solving skills. In the description for this skill, it includes literary analysis. I had to really stretch this specific skill with this assignment as it involved a lot of analysis and critical thinking.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I am most proud of my lateral research on Shermer himself. It was an important component of our paper to include and it was a critical thinking skill that I had only learned very recently.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
My Thinking and Problem Solving skills were developed because of the new techniques for critical thinking that I learned through writing this. For instance, lateral research is not something that I had practiced before this assignment. I learned this and other techniques that I plan to employ in the future.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The hardest part about this task, I thought, was finding things to critique in the book. I tend to be a very open-minded person and I agreed with a lot of Shermer's point. Because of this, I had to dig deep and try my best to be objective as I read.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
I think that, to improve this work, I would have taken more notes as I was reading the book. I did take notes, but it was only around halfway through that I realized I wasn't taking as objective a stance as I should have been.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
I got to employ a lot of my past writing experience to this assignment, I'm rather practiced in writing persuasive or point-making pieces because of my love of Language Arts classes.
How can you apply this to future learning?
For future learning, I will take my new experience about reviewing and critiquing books. Surprisingly, I haven't gotten a lot of chances to do much literary analysis. I imagine I will have to do more in the future and this experience will assist me.
